In 1990  Cheryl Pickering began propagating plants from cuttings and selling them at the local  markets and other established nurseries in the area. Our the worst day at one of these  markets was when we paid $5.00 for the site, set up our card tables with Cheryl’s plants on them  and didn’t sell a plant all morning.  We ate a pie and made a total loss of $8.50.  But that did not deter Cheryl’s determination.

We had many good weekends after that and  in 1994 opened Pickos Plants at the intersection of Hill and Queen Street, Yeppoon.  The nursery was located between a doctor’s surgery and a hairdressing salon on approximately 200square metres of vacant land.  Whenever it rained we would have a foot of water in our serving area until it drained away.  We had no phone connection at this location and had to purchase a bag phone which cost us $2,500.00 which was a huge outlay for such a small nursery.

Our nursery soon got a reputation for having quality plants and excellent service  and as a result  the business slowly grew until  in 2000 we purchased a block of land at 22 Mary Street, Yeppoon with the intention of one day building a Nursery.

Cheryl continued building the business until  2005  when our dream finally come true and we moved to our current location known as “Pickos Plants at the Beach”.
